My two sisters live in Sussex so it’s a great excuse to head down and spend time with them while exploring all that the area has to offer. This 3.5 mile walk from Amberley is ideal as a short stroll mixed with plenty of chatting and eating. Amberley is accessible by train from the north or south so it makes it really simple for get-togethers. Easily completed in an afternoon, this route is perfect for a quick catch up with family or friends and four-legged friends too!

Heading out along the River Arun, it’s amazing how far the views spread and how quiet and remote it feels. The River Arun is much wider than we expected and is teeming with surprises. We disturbed a heron who was waiting to catch his lunch and he looked beautiful as he took to the skies.

With the water-logged meadows successfully negotiated we arrived at Amberley village. There’s no two ways about it, it’s so idyllic and like a village frozen in time with so many thatched cottages. Seriously, if you’re not already planning a trip to Amberley...just do it! Such a shame that the village pub is currently closed, but we were compensated with the Amberley Tea Rooms. It’s the perfect place to pause as muddy boots and well-behaved dogs are welcome! There’s something about spending time with family that gives you licence to indulge so it’s cream tea all round for us...and we find out that all the crockery is made at the pottery that we just passed, how beautiful.

The next stretch is a bit of an effort, but nothing too difficult, as the route skirts over the edge of the South Downs. At least I won’t need to kill myself at the gym to burn off the calories devoured at the tea room! In no time it’s back to Amberley Station and the end of a pleasant afternoon with family.
